Toshiba Qosmio GENERAL IMPRESSION

Toshiba Qosmio  GENERAL IMPRESSION

GENERAL IMPRESSION
All I can say is wow! This is a beautiful laptop. It's a basic black with a ruby red trim around the outside edge of the bottom part. The word "Qosmio" light up on the back of the screen when the laptop is turned on.

I have never owned a Toshiba laptop before. I needed a new one to do video editing and selected this one over a similar ASUS model which was an inch and a half deeper (would no longer fit in my bag) and was two pounds heavier. This has the same footprint as my old Dell Studio 1737 and fits in my bag perfectly.

The keys are backlit with soft red light which will go out after a short period of inactivity to save battery. As soon as you press a key it will re-light. The keyboard keys have a nice feel to them and are great to type on. My only complaint with the keyboard is the up arrow key is too small and close to the right shift key. Not a big deal.

It boots extremely fast. I counted 10 seconds from pushing the power button to the logon screen. Once I have entered my password it's another 5 seconds for the desktop to come up.

There are four USB 3.0 ports. The two on the right side are Sleep and Charge ports. These allow you to charge USB devices even when your PC is turned off. Nice. It also has an HDMI output port.

The touchpad has a small icon in the upper left corner which allows you to disable the touchpad when you have a mouse plugged in. Just hold your finger about an inch above the icon and tap it. It will light when the pad is disabled. On my old laptops I had to go into the mouse settings to do this.

The power transformer is very large. I had read this in other reviews of Toshiba laptops but it will fit fine in my laptop bag and wasn't a show stopper.

I was looking for a decent sub $1000 laptop that came with Windows 7. This fit the bill nicely.

PROS
- Windows 7 Professional comes installed
- Windows 8.1 Pro installation DVDs and license included
- Great specs for the price
- Nice sound quality on the built in harman/kardon speakers
- Two USB 3.0 ports on right side

CONS
- Display is not very vibrant. I have it at max brightness and it looks OK. Wouldn't look great for movies, serious photo editing, or graphics intensive games.
- Battery and HDD do not have compartments. You have to remove the entire bottom plate to get to them. See below.
- I dislike the touchpad. Mainly the buttons which take some force to push. Right-click is therefore annoying. I tap instead of left-clicking. I also tap instead of right-clicking by using the "Tap Zones" feature, setting the top and bottom right actions to secondary click.
- Battery life is unimpressive at 3.9 hours.

ACCESSING THE HDD AND BATTERY
The only access panel on the back is for doing a memory upgrade. The user manual details how to do this. The user manual does not mention how to access or replace the battery or HDD.

To access the HDD and battery:
1. Remove all phillips screws from bottom. There's about 14 screws to remove from bottom.
2. Slide out DVD drive from side.
3. Pull off entire back cover by curling your fingers in the DVD drive bay (now empty). Just pull up on the black plastic cover plate. I was a little nervous when I first did this but it turned out to be easy.

To remove the HDD:
1. Do steps above for removing bottom cover plate.
2. With the HDD oriented closest to you, remove the two silver screws which mount the right HDD rail to the laptop.

My previous laptop was a toshiba satellite series and was my first brand new laptop. It is still working after 2+ years but I decided it was time to get something nice so after some time of checking out reviews on various laptops, sony, dell, etc I could not find something that was real nice and powerful and also had good reviews. I was not aware toshiba made a gamer series until I ran into the qosmio series.

I chose this model over the Q870 because it was about the same price ($50 difference) yet had more video ram and windows 7 pro instead of home.

Pros:
I've only had this laptop a month and have not had any issues, I use it pretty much every day.
The screen is nice and bright, I've only tested a few games and they all play fine, huge amount of video mem, nvidia
this thing has lots of plugins so nice for video work, I only dumped a few videos from my camcorder and they processed fast
i program a lot, this thing is fast
visually pleasing
bluray
64bit quad core, weeeeeeeee
4gb ram, same as my old but the video ram is over 1gb = wow
500gb hd
Linux compatible, i setup a secondary partition (100gb) and put ubuntu 10.04 on it and all drivers installed without any hassle, compiz works without a hitch
